Dental Sedation
Feel calm, comfortable and completely at ease — even during complex treatment.
IV Sedation for Comfortable, Stress-Free Dentistry
For patients who find dental treatment particularly difficult, intravenous (IV) conscious sedation can make appointments feel calmer and more manageable. The sedative helps you become deeply relaxed while remaining awake and able to respond to the dental team. Local anaesthetic is used separately to keep the treatment area comfortable.
Many people have little or no memory of the procedure afterwards. Before recommending sedation, we will review your medical history and discuss whether it is appropriate for your treatment. You will need a responsible adult to accompany you home and remain with you after the appointment.

FAQs About Dental Sedation
How does dental sedation work?
What type of dental sedation is available at Newnham Dental?
We provide intravenous (IV) conscious sedation. A sedative drug is delivered through a fine plastic tube in a vein in your hand or arm. The level of sedation can be precisely controlled and continuously adjusted to maintain comfort and safety throughout your treatment.
Will I be asleep during IV dental sedation?
Is IV sedation safe?
When can dental sedation be used?
Sedation can be used for almost any dental procedure—from hygiene appointments and routine care to longer or more complex treatments such as crowns, bridges, and dental implants.
It is particularly helpful if you:
- Have dental anxiety or a previous difficult experience
- Have a strong gag reflex or low pain threshold
- Require extensive or complex dental work
- Find that local anaesthetic alone is not enough for comfort
How long will I need to stay at the clinic after sedation?
Most patients are able to go home around an hour after treatment.
Are there any side effects?
After treatment with sedation
After IV sedation, your reactions will be slower than usual for up to 24 hours. For your safety, these precautions are essential:
- Arrange for a responsible adult to collect you and stay with you for at least 24 hours.
- Do not drive, travel alone, or use machinery.
- Do not care for others or make important decisions.
